Comments:
This is considered a successor to the "Aunt Jane's Nieces" books, since Baum employed the same pseudonym and published the first title the year after he completed the previous series. Mary Louise was the name of Baum's favorite sister. In the book, Mary Louise is a thoughtful and sensitive 15 year old. Other memorable characters include Irene, a girl confined to a wheel chair whose self-sufficiency kept her form being pathetic, and Josie O'Gorman, the daughter of a secret service agent. The book is an engaging mystery with strong suspense and intrigue. Readers will be surprised to discover Baum's cynical description of the U.S. Secret Service as a menace to society.
